In a word (or two) - hard work.

Fabulous warm, sunny weather. Dry as a bone, sand blowing everywhere. Reminded me of Fuerte.

First sail since last October, very gusty, & I (stupidly) thought I'd play it safe by going out on the 112l Kode & 5.5m sail. Big mistake. The chop was so bad, I was bouncing everywhere. Quick change down to 86l wave board and things rapidly improved.

With wind in same direction as tide, staying upwind was a bit of a planing struggle going into the chop, but bearing away was just plain scary. Chances of dry gybes were pretty limited.

However, just like in Fuerte, the wind would suddenly switch off - sometimes for minutes at a time. This led to some prolonged periods of cooling off (water not exactly temperate, yet).

As the tide dropped, so did the strength of the gusts, so gybing become a reality once again. It helped to seek out the flatter patches of water, but these spookily coincided with holes in the wind.

We were probably out for about 3 hours before knackered arms dictated cessation of activities. By this time, the wind was dropping a bit, and most people were having trouble planing anyway.

A good day, though - definitely worth the trip - this being in Tony's (very large) van, pulling a trailer for my kit & Nigel's.

BTW: One now has to pay to park at Newton beach. And the car park was almost full when we got there at 10:00. £10 for the van & trailer, but not bad when split between 3 people.
